Mysore sidewalks...

Each morning - early - the maids wash the sidewalks around the houses and then draw designs with a powdered chalk. These change from day to day, although some maids seem to have specialties. Some are quite ambitious and some more perfunctory. When I gave my maid some money to buy a saree for a special occasion... one appeared in front of my door...

Beautiful! The first one has been drawn for a special occasion or on Friday. The one below that is drawn below a "pandal". There is a function of some sort, could be a wedding, naming ceremony, engagement... The others are simple daily ones.

The origin for Rangoli(which is what they are called) is rice flour. Now they use powders. Early in the morning they sweep the front clean and sprinkle the dry mud with water to tamp it down. Then the ladies/girls draw these with rice flour which the birds and the little bugs eat. So everything has a purpose :-)
