pooja

In Mysore the apartments have a small pooja - or prayer room. In practice they tend to be a place with an altar where is it possible to make sacrifices to, for example - in the case of my landlady - the family's patron deity. After trying for a while to figure it out, I have decided the one in tile on my pooja wall is Babaji. Since I am not Hindu, I felt that it was inappropriate for me to have a Hindu altar in my pooja. So, I found a simple gold secular wall hanging of elephants and birds to cover Babaji, and then made a Christian altar in front of it. This took a while but I finally found an incense holder with a cross and a Sticker. This Sticker is the 'bleeding heart of Jesus' icon surrounded with Indian money. CK tells me money is called "dew dew" in Kanada...

Have you tried shopping at Cauvery's? They have some really neat stuff. I get down at BATA at the junction of Dhanvantri Road Sayyaji Road(Ashok Book House) and make a left and cross over to the other side and walk past about 100 feet and CAUVERY is right there. The Bangalore one is on MG Road at the junction of Brigade Road. That is huge!

Also try out the flavored milks at the Nandini booth. My sons love the whole trip starting off with a milk then chomping on some sweets at Bombay Tiffany;s then walking inside the City Market. Out through the market through the Statue Circle(another BATA)Make a right onto Urs Road. Some groceries at Food World and finish with rawa idli at the other Bombay Tiffany;s washed down with cold badam milk :-)
We will be there this weekend and the boys cannot wait to start trekking around for coconut water and jackfruit!

Cauvery's? I know where Ashok Books is... are you saying to cross Sayyai Rao Rd from the book store and then walk away from the circle up Sayyai 100 ft? When you arrive you can guess who I am... I spend a lot of time eatting and interneting (work) at Anu's Cafe up the hill from the shala...

Ask at the Ashok Book House. They will give you the directions. It is a government organization and they have wood carvings, jewellery, bedsheets and lots of other gift stuff at extremely reasonable prices and if you tell them you need to bring it back to the US they will pack it for you.

Also, I am not a yoga practioner. I am from the land of your great-aunts, Pennsylvania :-)

I was only born in Karnataka(in the south the mothers go back to their parent's home for child birth). I was raised in the north and south but never in Mysore :-). My parents moved to be closer to their siblings after I moved out.
So I am discovering Mysore in each visit of mine.

Also, If Dr.Disco is reading, try cotton clothes.(I could not post on your site as I am not a blogger). Go over to Fabindia and pick out some loose kurtas. It is a new store. I have not been to that location but a lot of the clothes I use are from Fabindia. Or try any of the stores on Sayyaji Rao Road or Urs Road. You can pick the material and they will tailor it to your measurements in a couple of days.

Enjoy and be happy.
